A BRILLIANT Q&A with Musical Theatre Masterclass Acting Coach, Anna Tringham.
1. Did you have a mentor growing up? If so, what did they teach you?
“I did – her name is Jackie Sands. She owned and ran the Sandsgate Theatre School in the village I grow up in. She had been a West End performer in the 60s-70’s until she effectively retired from performing and decided to open a theatre school. She taught me stagecraft, theatre etiquette, and that the Musical Theatre Golden Era had the brightest gems in it.”
2. As well as being a teacher at MTM you’re a very successful performer in your own right! What aspect of your training helped you to be where you are today?
“My Laban and movement classes. As far as I was concerned, these classes connected everything I learned in dance, voice and acting classes. I didn’t know it then, but my love of these classes lead me to my career today at GSA!”
3. What/who inspired you to become a professional performer?
“Dame Julie Andrews. I adored The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins as a child.”
4. What do you love most about teaching the new generation of musical theatre stars at MTM?
“Helping them to make connections not just in their craft, but to the world they hope to recreate on stage.”
5. What’s the best bit of advice you would give to young aspiring performers?
“Listen to, and observe the world; There is so much you can learn when you just listen. Valuable pieces of life experience are missed because instead of listening we are too busy waiting to reply; and by observing people & society opens your eyes to the complex and varied characters. Without this knowledge how do we hope to interact with other actors, or create characters on stage or on camera if all we know is ourselves?”
